Things Can Gradually Improve

Times are tough, and evidence indicates that the quality of life for most people will only get worse if humanity continues to operate the way that it has for the last century. The reason we are struggling is because our population is too large and consumes too much to be supported by the ecosystems we rely on to support us. Our overpopulation is why we are suffering and will continue to suffer, and even though this is not the complex, entertaining explanation people are looking for, it is the honest one.

Some people make claims that a lower birth rate is a bad thing, but currently nothing could be further from the truth. Decreasing birthrates are the most humane possible way to lower our population over time. More than a spiritual awakening, we need a demographic awakening. We all need to embrace the changes that create a future that has less people who are more content. We need to realize the economy, like our population, can’t grow past the point of the ecosystem being able to support it.

The truth is, if there are less people, individuals will have more access to resources. There will be less need to convert wilderness into farmland or housing, creating more biodiversity which will improve the health of our ecosystems and our societies. There will be less traffic and pollution, and less greenhouse gasses trapping heat. There will be less billionaires, but more of…
